Wayne's Blog: Improving Horse Welfare in 2012
In 2012, The HSUS's horse protection work included an investigation exposing soring in the Tennessee walking horse industry, blocking horse slaughter plants from opening in several states, stopping government agencies from killing wild burros, among others. In 2013 we plan to expand our efforts against soring and horse slaughter.

The HSUS Releases Annual Ranking of State Animal Protection Laws
The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization, has released its fourth annual “Humane State Ranking” report, a comprehensive analysis of animal protection laws in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The HSUS graded states on the strength of a wide range of animal protection laws, including public policies dealing with animal cruelty and fighting, pets, wildlife, equines, animals in research, and farm animals.

Teddy Bear the Horse Now Cozy at Duchess Sanctuary
A young Percheron horse named Teddy Bear was being bullied and beaten by a group of older stallions in an unsheltered pasture. He is regaining strength at Duchess Sanctuary and preparing for a new adoptive home.

Duchess Sanctuary Offers Safe Haven for Two Lucky Mustangs
Two mustang mares were saved from slaughter, bailed out of the Nevada feedlot by the Ark Watch Foundation only hours before the truck was to depart for Canada. Rescued just a couple of weeks apart, the mares were transported to safety at the Duchess Sanctuary.

The HSUS applauds New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for signing A.2023, a bill that prohibits the slaughter of horses and sale of horse flesh for human consumption, bans the sale of horse meat or products derived from slaughtered horses and bans the transport of horse meat or live horses for the purpose of slaughter.

New Report on Human Health Risks from Consumption of American Horse Meat
The HSUS issued a report detailing the food safety risks associated with consuming meat that originates in American horses. Horses in the U.S. are primarily used for companionship or competition, therefore they are not treated in the same way as animals raised for human consumption. Horses are commonly given pharmaceuticals that have been banned for use in food-producing animals by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Commission’s Food and Veterinary Office.
