Dog Joins Activists at IN Statehouse

Rehabbed pit bull puts face on dog fighting

The Humane Society of the United States

by Anne Sterling

Animal advocates from across Indiana gathered in Indianapolis last month to urge lawmakers to crack down on puppy mills, dog fighting and horse neglect. Nearly 40 folks joined me to meet with their elected officials and bringing attention to animal-related issues in Indiana.

Cole, a rescued pit bull terrier, accompanied us around the statehouse. Cole is now a highly trained search & rescue dog. As a pit bull, Cole put a face on the issue of dog fighting in Indiana. Part of the bill we are advocating makes being a spectator at an animal fight a felony.

In August, the Humane Society of the United States assisted law enforcement with raiding the largest known dog fighting ring in Indiana. Over 109 dogs were seized from deplorable conditions.
