Readers submit their best photos to All Animals
I’ve loved horses ever since I was little. My parents couldn’t afford riding lessons, so when my daughter was about 10, I finally took lessons with her. I loved it—I actually cried when we got up to cantering. It touched me so deeply to be on this huge animal racing across the field.
I’m retired now, and two Septembers ago, my husband and I traveled across the country to tour national parks and memorials, including Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse Memorial. The highlight was a trip to Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary near Hot Springs, S.D.
The guide drove us through open fields in an old half-sized school bus, stopping at caves with petroglyphs, Native American ceremonial sites, and locations where scenes from Hidalgo and Crazy Horse were filmed. But best of all were the horses. There were no halters or bridles, just these beautiful mustangs living wild and free.
