Featherbottom charmed her way into a sanctuary visitor's heart. Barbi Lazarus

Several years ago, my mother and I stayed at a bed-and-breakfast in Ontario. It was a magical place, surrounded by green pastures, with rescued chickens, sheep, goats, guinea pigs, and chinchillas.

After a wonderful four-course breakfast with incredible vegan waffles, we went out to visit the animals, including this rescued duck named Featherbottom. We fed her treats and she followed us around, often stopping to pose for the camera like a supermodel.

I find it amazing that animals rescued from such horrible situations can still be so welcoming. I was a complete stranger coming to Featherbottom's home, and all she wanted to do was make friends. I also find it inspiring to know that despite all the cruelty in the world, there are people devoting their lives to helping animals.
