One student received the grand prize award and six students received finalist awards. Their drawings can be viewed through the slideshow on this page. The drawings of the six students who received honorable mention awards can be viewed here.
The contest, sponsored by The Humane Society of the United States, ran from April 1 to June 1, 2009 and was open to all U.S. students in kindergarten through 6th grade. Entrants were encouraged to create drawings that depicted chimpanzees in a sanctuary or natural habitat. The grand prize winner will receive a $500 savings bond and the six finalists will receive $25 gift certificates to Toys R Us.
The contest was designed to help bring attention to the nearly 600 chimpanzees residing in U.S. sanctuaries after spending decades of their lives suffering in laboratory settings. More than 1,000 chimpanzees still live in nine research labs throughout the U.S.
