Back to School in Fur-Free Style
Let compassion be your fashion statement
When it comes to back-to-school shopping, it's still "buyer beware" when it comes to fur trim.
Although five states have passed stricter fur-labeling requirements, in most areas a legal loophole allows retailers to not include anything on the label stating that the garment's fur trim is from a real animal, whether a rabbit, fox, raccoon dog, or other animal.
Even if the fur trim is dyed blue or pink, it could still be real animal fur—and not required to be labeled.
The good news is that we've got tools that can help you avoid animal fur and shop cruelty-free.
- Check out our field guide to identifying animal fur [PDF], and our list of fur-free retailers, designers, and brands.
