More Than a Ton of Ivory Destroyed in Times Square

United States Crushes Ivory to Raise Awareness of Poaching Crisis and Ivory Trade

The United States government destroyed more than one ton of illegal ivory to raise awareness of the poaching crisis and ivory trade. Iris Ho, wildlife program manager at Humane Society International released the following statement:

“The ivory crush is akin to a somber memorial service for the slaughtered elephants. It is also a pivotal occasion to rally the public to eschew ivory consumption. We are encouraged by the unequivocal commitment by the Administration to reaffirm its leadership in stemming the senseless elephant slaughters and reducing demand for ivory. Are we the generations to lose the last remaining elephants or to save them? Not only is the elephant's survival at stake, but also our generation’s conservation legacy.”
