And the Nominees for The HSUS' 23rd Genesis Awards Are...
Animal Protection Group Fetes the Best in Animal-Friendly News, Entertainment Media at Annual Awards Show
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization, will roll out the red carpet for 58 nominees in 19 major media categories at The 23rd Genesis Awards gala ceremony on Saturday, March 28 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.
The only awards show of its kind honoring the news and entertainment media for showcasing animal issues, this year's Genesis Awards gives the nod to an eclectic range of popular fare. The contenders include Walt Disney's Academy Award-nominated Bolt and 20th Century Fox's box office hit Marley and Me, nominated in the Feature Film category, and syndicated TV giants The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Martha Stewart Living snagging all three Genesis Talk Show nominations. Primetime favorites such as Fox's Bones, ABC's Grey's Anatomy and NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit are in line for the best Dramatic Series Award.
On the news front, all three broadcast networks are acknowledged with CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams and ABC's World News with Charles Gibson nominated for National News Feature, while ABC's Nightline and 20/20 are up for TV Newsmagazine – National. CNN has two nominations with Planet in Peril, a nominee for TV Documentary, and Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell competing with HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel in the TV Newsmagazine – Cable category.
"Animal protection is a subject that is finding its way into all media genres and platforms because it's an issue of genuine interest and concern to audiences everywhere," says Beverly Kaskey, senior director of The HSUS' Hollywood office and executive producer of the annual Genesis Awards. "This year's Genesis nominees prove that whether you're a fan of animated comedies like Fox's Family Guy or The Simpsons, or unscripted series like FX's 30 Days or Animal Planet's Whale Wars, there's a compelling and entertaining story to be told."
The 23rd Genesis Awards will also present The Wyler Award to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi for making news on behalf of animals. The award, named after Genesis Awards founder and former Broadway headliner Gretchen Wyler, was previously bestowed on Sir Paul McCartney and Hayden Panettiere.
This year's event is dedicated to ending the Canadian seal hunt.
Among those serving on The 23rd Genesis Awards honorary committee are Rosanna Arquette, Sean Astin, William Baldwin and Chynna Phillips, Jillian Barberie, James Cromwell, Emily Deschanel, Harrison Ford, Kyle MacLachlan, Bill Maher, Maria Menounos, Viggo Mortensen, Kevin Nealon, Patti Page, Hayden Panettiere, Mickey Rourke, Alicia Silverstone, Amy Smart, Amber Tamblyn and Robert Wagner.
The 23rd Genesis Awards is made possible in part by our corporate sponsors: Market Development Group, BeKind.org, Poker Stars.net and Prai Beauty Group.
