The HSUS, Hill's Pet Nutrition Join to Help Sled Dogs in Alaska

The Humane Society of the United States

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization, and Hill's Pet Nutrition are collaborating to address the plight of hungry sled dogs in rural Alaskan villages.

With extensive damage to area food caches and fish wheels caused by floodwaters and ice, Yukon River communities' sled dogs are in urgent need of proper pet nutrition. With dog sledding serving as a vital, daily mode of transportation among Alaska dog mushers, The HSUS and Hill's Pet Nutrition promptly made arrangements to assist affected communities with emergency rations of Hill's® Science Diet® brand pet food.

"To many interior Alaskans, their dogs are their transportation and their lifeline. The emergency need for dog food was quickly identified by The HSUS and the Alaska Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters," said Dave Pauli, The HSUS' Western Region Director. "When Hill's came forward to help our family sled dog teams, they really reached out to help both the people and animals of many flood-affected villages."

With the support of Hill's Pet Nutrition and the Alaska Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (AK VOAD), emergency pet food shipments and human relief efforts were extended to these Alaskan communities in need. On May 26, the first shipment of 140 bags of donated Hill's® Science Diet® brand dog food arrived in Fairbanks. Since then, Alaska Civil Air Patrol pilots have been transporting the pet food directly as needed — specifically to the villages of Eagle, Tanana and Bethel which had been hit the hardest.

"We are grateful for this opportunity to lend a hand to these communities and their four-legged partners," said Neil Thompson, President and CEO, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. "We hope our donations help to alleviate the challenges caused by floodwaters, as well as strengthen the nutrition and well-being of these sled dogs."

A total of 25,000 pounds of Hill's® Science Diet® brand dog food will be donated over the next three weeks and Hill's will cover shipping costs. Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. manufactures high-quality, great-tasting pet foods owners can trust and give to their canine and feline companions as part of a veterinary health care team recommendation.
