The HSUS Assists Kern County, Calif., Animal Control with Rescue of 134 Cats

The Humane Society of the United States, spcaLA and United Animal Nations assisted Kern County Animal Control with the removal of 134 cats from a house belonging to Cause 4 Cats, a Lebec, Calif., organization operating as a cat sanctuary.

Kern County Animal Control called on The HSUS to help remove the cats after a lengthy investigation revealed conditions that were endangering the cats' welfare.  Negotiations with Kern County officials resulted in the voluntary relinquishment of the animals.

"We are glad to have helped get these cats on a path to finding healthy and happy homes," said Adam Parascandola, The HSUS' director of animal cruelty issues. "We applaud Kern County Animal Control Director Guy Shaw and his team for the compassionate leadership they showed in negotiating this situation to a good outcome for the cats and the sanctuary."

The HSUS team, which is helping with animal handling, transportation, sheltering and much-needed supplies, asked United Animal Nations and the spcaLA for help with animal care and sheltering support. PetSmart Charities® donated food and other supplies to the rescue efforts.

The cats were living in a variety of indoor and outdoor areas, with many dealing with treatable respiratory and skin conditions.  Removed cats were examined by a veterinarian and transported to a temporary shelter in nearby Lancaster. The HSUS will work with the community to find appropriate placement for the cats. PetSmart Charities® is offering Emergency Relief veterinary care grants to approved organizations that agree to foster and place 10 or more cats.
