The HSUS Announces Winners of Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest
Jinjy the dog singled out from more than 28,000 entries
The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization, its global arm Humane Society International and veterinary affiliate Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association are pleased to announce the winners of the fourth annual Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest, presented by Zazzle. The contest featured awards in two categories – a winner selected by a panel of judges and a winner determined by the amount of money raised for spay/neuter programs.
With more than 28,000 entries in the Judged Category, a panel of celebrity judges faced a daunting task, but in the end, Jessica Fishman of Edwards, Colo.’s photo and description of her dog Jinjy carried the day. The 2011 contest judges were professional photographers Robert B. Haas, Amanda Jones and Lori A. Cheung.
Jinjy and Jessica will receive: a studio session with Jones, one of the country’s premier pet photographers; a $500 shopping spree at Humane Domain, The HSUS’ official online store; and a copy of Haas’ book “I Dreamed of Flying Like a Bird.”
In the Fundraisers Category, Marleen Oetzel, and her dog Matilda won by raising more than $35,000 for the Lost and Found Dog Rescue Adoption Center in their hometown of New Castle, Del.
As the grand prize winner in the Fundraisers Category, Oetzel will receive a four-night trip for two to Hollywood for the 2012 Genesis Awards, a custom painting of Matilda by pet portrait artist Janie Coleman, and a $500 electronic gift card to Humane Domain.
“We congratulate the winners of both categories, and thank all the thousands of people who submitted wonderful photos of their cherished family pets," said John Snyder, vice president of companion animals for The HSUS. "The photo contest is a celebration of our animal companions, and all the joy and enrichment they bring to our lives every day.”
The more than 28,000 entrants to the photo contest collectively raised nearly $340,000 to support the spay/neuter programs of The HSUS, HSI, and nearly 300 local organizations around the globe.
The HSUS, HSI and HSVMA coordinate Spay Day by organizing animal welfare organizations, veterinary professionals, individual advocates and others around the world to offer low and no-cost spay/neuter services, fundraisers to benefit spay/neuter programs, and educational efforts to increase awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering pets and feral cats. Last year, HSVMA Field Services was able to provide free veterinary care to more than 8,000 needy pet owners and their companion animals with help from the Spay Day Photo Contest. Spay Day 2011 took place on Feb. 22 and throughout the month of February with 700 events in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories, as well as 46 other countries.
