The HSUS Recognized for Workplace Excellence and Environmental Stewardship
The Humane Society of the United States is proud to receive Alliance for Workplace Excellence awards for workplace excellence and ecoleadership.
“We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts to make our offices great places to work,” said Laura Maloney, The HSUS’ chief of staff. “As an organization, we not only strive to end animal abuse worldwide, but also to do our part to preserve the environment and the wellbeing of our employees.”
This is the ninth year in a row that The HSUS has been recognized for its workplace excellence. The Alliance has recognized the Washington area’s best places to work for the past 12 years. Since 2009, The Alliance has also honored businesses that have demonstrated their commitment to environmental sustainability, and The HSUS has made that list all three years. The 63 winning companies represent more than 1 million employees from organizations of all sizes and in all sectors—private, public and nonprofit.
The Workplace Excellence Award highlights businesses that promote professional fulfillment and personal wellness at work, at home, and in the community. All award applicants undergo a comprehensive evaluation process, which assesses corporate culture and management practices, family- and employee-friendly policies, health and wellness initiatives, diversity practices, and other areas.
One way in which The HSUS has improved the workplace is by inviting employees to bring their dogs to work with them. More than 50 dogs participate in the program at The HSUS’ offices. Employees find that the Dogs at Work program fosters increased communication and reduces stress in the workplace while maintaining a professional office environment. As an added benefit, several dogs have been adopted from local groups because employees could bring their companions to work. The HSUS has published Dogs at Work: A Practical Guide for Creating Dog-Friendly Workplaces to help other employers create a dog-friendly environment.
The EcoLeadership Award honors companies that demonstrate visionary leadership and a commitment to environmental sustainability through waste minimization, water conservation, energy efficiency and other criteria.
The HSUS developed a multi-faceted environmental stewardship program several years ago, and is constantly implementing new green tactics. Our comprehensive recycling program has been extended to include ink cartridges, batteries, cell phones, chargers, shipping pallets, office supplies and electronics. The HSUS donates large office furniture and computers to schools in the community. We have also set up a composting station in the lunchroom so that employees can responsibly dispose of biodegradable trash and food.
