The HSUS Announces Fifth Annual Dogs of Valor Award Winners
The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization, is pleased to announce that Hank, a great dane from Kansas City, Missouri, has received the top honor in its fifth annual Dogs of Valor Awards. Hank was named not just Valor Dog of the Year by celebrity judges Tamar Geller and Braylon Edwards, but also received the highest number of votes in the People’s Hero Award.
The awards celebrate the human-animal bond by honoring dogs who have exhibited an extraordinary sense of courage or resolve by heroically helping a person in need.
Hank earned the Valor Dog of the Year and People’s Hero awards by helping to shield his owner from her boyfriend who was viciously attacking her with a hammer. Although he was also injured, he provided enough of a distraction to allow the woman to escape.
“The dogs in this year’s Humane Society of the United States Dogs of Valor Awards are powerful examples of the strong bond between people and animals,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. “Hank’s heroism in the face of such terrible violence is just another example of dogs employing their amazing senses, intelligence and courage.”
A panel of celebrity judges named Buddy, a Labrador retriever from South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, first runner-up for keeping her owner warm for hours after he collapsed in a blizzard. She was also able to alert rescuers to the location of her owner, who was near death at the time of his rescue.
Titan, a pit bull from Lawrenceville, Georgia, was named second runner-up for preventing his owner from leaving for work and instead guided him to his wife, who was unconscious with a brain aneurysm and fractured skull.
Celebrities Tamar Geller, author and dog trainer, and Braylon Edwards, NFL wide receiver, joined The HSUS staff in selecting the winners. The People’s Hero was chosen by the public through online voting at humanesociety.org/dogsofvalor and facebook.com/humanesociety.
The winners will receive prizes from Bella Tocca Tags, Custom Glass Etching, and The HSUS’ online store, Humane Domain.
