Prism Magazine Honored at The Humane Society of the United States’ 26th Anniversary Genesis Awards

Magazine Feature on Church’s History in Protection of Animals Earns William Wilberforce Award

The Humane Society of the United States awarded Prism Magazine with the Genesis Outstanding Written Word William Wilberforce Award. The award honors journalistic excellence on animal protection issues in faith-based publications. The HSUS presented the award during The HSUS’ 26th Anniversary Genesis Awards ceremony.

Prism Magazine’s July/August 2011 story, “A Call to Compassion from Our Brothers the Animals,” by Kendra Langdon Juskus, won the award.

“Juskus did a brilliant job of highlighting Evangelical Christianity’s rich tradition of protecting animals,” said Christine Gutleben, director of The HSUS’ Faith Outreach program. “We know her great work will inspire many to renew their commitment to care for God’s creation.”

The annual star-studded affair in Los Angeles pays tribute to major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding works that increase public awareness of animal issues. The two-day celebration, March 23 and 24, included awards presentations on both days recognizing excellence in print, television and film.

The HSUS’ Genesis Awards are bestowed by celebrity presenters before an audience comprised of members of the entertainment industry, news media, business and humane communities. Saturday’s ceremony will be televised on May 4, with an encore presentation on May 5 on Animal Planet.

“I wrote this article hoping that I could present more than just a dry defense for why Christians—Prism magazine’s main readership—ought to be aware of the long Christian tradition of animal care and continue in that tradition today,” Juskus said. “I certainly wanted to reveal that tradition, but I also wanted to take it a step further…. I think I found that extra inspiration in writing the article: having mercy for animals is an act of compassion, and it leads to greater acts of compassion”

The William Wilberforce Award was named for the British abolitionist who was also a man of deep faith and a founding figure of the animal protection movement. This award seeks to carry on his legacy of compassion.
