HBO Executive James Costos Elected to The HSUS’ Board of Directors

The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization, announces the election of James Costos to its board of directors. Costos is vice president of global licensing and retail, consumer marketing for HBO.

“The Humane Society of the United States is excited about the election of James Costos to its board of directors,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. “Costos brings a winning combination of passion for the issues, business expertise, and political engagement that will serve the organization and help us achieve our far-reaching animal protection goals.”

Costos graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1985 with a political science degree. His career began as a fashion and retail executive in New York and evolved to film and television, where he served as a senior executive of Revolution Studios before founding Eight Cylinders Inc., an entertainment marketing and licensing agency. In 2006, HBO tapped Costos to head its new global licensing and marketing division.

No stranger to animal protection issues, Costos said his concern about humane standards and treatment toward animals developed more than a decade ago when he came across a video online documenting cruelty to pigs.

"The video got me to thinking about where the food I was eating was coming from, how it got to the table,” Costos said. “I’m most interested in working to pass corporate standards and legislation to protect animals for the long term and The HSUS embraces this pragmatic approach.  I’m thrilled about being able to put the resources I have to work.”

Costos lives in Los Angeles with his partner Michael Smith and their three dogs, all of whom were rescued from abusive situations. Costos said he’s also excited to get involved with issues such as The HSUS’ puppy mills campaign, emergency disaster rescue for pets, and efforts to end animal testing and factory farming. His term on the board will last three years.

The HSUS board of directors is made up of 27 dedicated and influential leaders charged with oversight of the largest animal protection organization in the country.
