The Humane Society of the United States Rescues More Than 20 Horses from Mississippi Flood

The HSUS also deploys to Louisiana to help animals in need

The Humane Society of the United States worked with McComb animal control officers and local volunteers to rescue 23 horses from flood waters reaching their chests in Magnolia, Miss. as part of ongoing efforts to help communities and animals along the Gulf Coast impacted by Hurricane Isaac. Tragically, before the rescue efforts began, two horses drowned.

The HSUS is also assisting with the placement of all homeless and adoptable pets from the McComb Animal Shelter in McComb, Miss., to make room for animals rescued from Hurricane Isaac. The HSUS and Okaloosa County Disaster Animal Response Team are transporting the animals to the Montgomery Humane Society in Montgomery, Ala., one of The HSUS’ Emergency Placement Partners.

“The Humane Society of the United States is on the ground to help with animal rescue, handling, sheltering and transportation needs during flooding caused by Hurricane Isaac,” said Lydia Sattler, the Mississippi state director for The HSUS. “The storm surge and heavy rains have been devastating and our work is not only important for these terrified animals, but for their caregivers who are desperate to save them.”

The HSUS has also deployed its Animal Rescue Team to Jefferson Parish, La., in response to a request for assistance from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter. Rescuers will begin transferring animals from the shelter to other locations in order to ease the burden on the local community and make room for more rescued animals during the crisis.

The HSUS has been updating pet owners in the region via Twitter, using the handle @HumaneSociety, and Facebook with resources on pet friendly evacuation shelters and other information.
