Reward Offered for Information about Hawk Shootings in Niagara County
The Humane Society of the United States and The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering two separate rewards of up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for two illegal hawk shooting cases in Niagara County, N.Y.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, on July 13 a red-tailed hawk was discovered along Green Road in Cambria, N.Y. The hawk had been shot and later died while in the care of a rehabilitator. On July 18, a Coopers hawk was discovered shot on Ruie Street in North Tonawanda. The hawk had to be euthanized as a result of the injury.
“We implore anyone with information about these senseless killings to do the right thing and come forward,” said Brian Shapiro, New York state director for The HSUS. “The Humane Society of the United States thanks the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for working tirelessly to bring these wildlife violators to justice.”
Shooting a hawk is a violation of the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, as well as New York state law.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact U.S. Fish and Wildlife Special Agent Lee Schneckenberger at (716)-691-3635 ext.202. Callers may remain anonymous.
- Wildlife officials estimate that nationwide, tens of millions of animals are poached annually.
- It is estimated that only 1 percent to 5 percent of poached animals come to the attention of law enforcement.
- Poachers injure or kill wildlife anytime, anywhere and sometimes do so in particularly cruel ways. Wildlife officials report that poachers often commit other crimes as well.
- The HSUS and HSWLT work with state and federal wildlife agencies to offer rewards of $2,500 for information leading to arrest and conviction of suspected poachers.
The HSUS and HSWLT work to curb poaching across the country. Visit humanesociety.org/poaching for more information.
