The Humane Society of the United States is transferring nearly 200 dogs and cats from animal shelters in Jefferson Parish, La. and McComb, Miss. to other locations in order to ease the burden on local communities and make room for more rescued pets during the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac.

In response to a request from Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, The HSUS will transport approximately 150 animals from their Eastbank and Westbank facilities to the Humane Society of Charlotte in North Carolina. The animals will be sheltered at the Humane Society of Charlotte for 48 hours until they can be transported to HSUS’ Emergency Placement Partners throughout the state where they will then be available for adoption. The Humane Society of Charlotte will provide medical treatment to any special needs animals.

“We are pleased to partner with animal shelters in the communities affected by Hurricane Isaac and help them care for pets in the aftermath of the storm,” said Niki Dawson, director of disaster services for The HSUS. “The Humane Society of the United States thanks all of our Emergency Placement Partners for taking in these pets and giving them the opportunity to find loving homes.”
