The Humane Society of the United States Helping Maryland Dog Owners after Pit Bull Court Decision

Marylanders are urged to visit humanesociety.org/protectmddogs or call 1-855-MDDOGS1 (1-855-633-6471) for the latest information

To assist Maryland dog owners and other citizens concerned about liability related to “pit bull” dogs stemming from a recent Court of Appeals ruling, The Humane Society of the United States has assembled resources and established the Protect Maryland Dogs Helpline.

“Since there may be no further legislative action on the ruling until January 2013, Maryland families need help now,” said KC Theisen, director of pet care issues for The HSUS. “We are here to provide clear, accurate information on the ruling, its consequences, and resources for property owners and families. Families should not be forced to make a painful and life-changing choice between their homes and their beloved dogs.”

The HSUS is working with dog owners who rent their homes, and with other stakeholders in the recent ruling, to ensure that all parties are informed. Many shelters and rescues in and around the state of Maryland have reported that callers in need of assistance have overwhelmed their phone lines, and tragically many have already seen families relinquish their cherished pets as a result of the ruling.

The Protect Maryland Dogs Helpline at 1-855-MDDOGS1 (1-855-633-6471) contains recorded information and callers may leave a voice mail for HSUS staff or request a copy of the information by mail. People can also find the information and submit questions online at humanesociety.org/protectmddogs. The HSUS aims to give Maryland dog owners and concerned citizens the facts, and help keep pets and their families together. The HSUS welcomes inquiries from property owners and others impacted by the ruling who want to learn more.
