Connecticut State Reps. Auden Grogins and Diana Urban Receive 2012 Humane State Legislator Award

The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization, is pleased to announce that Connecticut state Reps. Auden Grogins, D-Bridgeport, and Diana Urban, D-North Stonington and Stonington, have been selected as Connecticut’s Humane State Legislators for 2012. Each year, The HSUS recognizes select state lawmakers across the country who pursue landmark animal protection legislation and demonstrably advance reform in the policy-making arena.

“I am honored to be given this very important award by The Humane Society of the United States,” Rep. Grogins said at a ceremony held at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. “I believe that animals need a voice in Hartford and deserve to have people advocating for their welfare.”

“It is so gratifying to be recognized by The Humane Society of the United States for my work on animal welfare and the link between animal cruelty and future violent behavior,” said Rep. Urban. “The HSUS is an amazing supportive partner in the quest to give a voice to the voiceless.”

The HSUS recognized Reps. Grogins and Urban for their work on several fronts: increasing penalties for cruelty to animals, taking action against cruel puppy mills through passage of the Pet Lemon Law, banning Internet hunting, and passing legislation to increase likelihood of adoptions in municipal shelters. The HSUS also praised Rep. Urban for her efforts to increase the understanding of the link between violence against animals and violence against people through her support of legislation requiring cross reporting of child abuse and animal abuse.

“Representatives Grogins and Urban have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Connecticut’s animals,” said Annie Hornish, Connecticut state director for The HSUS. “The legislation they helped to pass will make a meaningful difference for pets and wildlife, and The Humane Society of the United States is enormously grateful for their extraordinary dedication.”

House Speaker Brendan Sharkey, House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz, and Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, as well as several other state representatives, attended the ceremony to congratulate Reps. Grogins and Urban. Leaders from local animal welfare groups such as Our Companions Domestic Animal Sanctuary, Connecticut Votes for Animals and the Connecticut Humane Society also attended.
