Angelenos asked to unleash their generosity on behalf of dogs and cats, and their owners, in East L.A.

In keeping with the season’s spirit of gift giving, a holiday leash and collar drive aimed at collecting 1,000 dog and cat collars and leashes for distribution to pet owners in under-served communities in east Los Angeles will launch tomorrow and run until December 15. The program is a collaboration between The Humane Society of the United States and Red Barn Feed & Pet stores.

The HSUS operates a community outreach program, Pets for Life, in Los Angeles and several major cities across the nation, providing services such as spay/neuter surgery, dog training, wellness care, pet food and supplies to dogs and cats and their owners who are most in need.

Michelle Cho, vice president of The HSUS Los Angeles office, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Angelenos to show their support for animals and their community this festive season, and all it takes is the gift of a very inexpensive but essential accessory – a leash and collar. Keeping pets and their families together is at the heart of The HSUS’ Pets for Life program and providing these pet care fundamentals is the first step towards maintaining those ties and elevating the human-animal bond.”

Angelenos are invited to donate leashes and collars at Red Barn locations or deliver, or mail them to The HSUS Los Angeles office at 820 Moraga Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90049. Leashes and collars with metal, rather than plastic buckles, are preferred due to their strength and durability.

HSUS’ Pets for Life program builds humane communities using innovative strategies and fresh approaches designed to extend the reach of animal services, resources and information to under-served areas. Addressing the critical need for accessible, affordable pet care, this program helps animals by empowering the people who care for them.
