Local Apex Restaurant Offers More Humane Choices
Peak City Grill Supports Humane and Sustainable Farmers
Apex, NC — Local restaurant Peak City Grill announced it will be adding to its menu grass-fed beef from nearby Harris-Robinette Beef, a Pinetops, NC farm that raises all of its cattle exclusively on pasture. The Humane Society of the United States welcomed the announcement as a positive step for animal welfare.
Harris-Robinette Ranch states, “We exist to provide the consumer with an affordable environmentally sound high quality nutritious beef through the raising of our livestock exclusively on a grass based system. We utilize a pasture to plate system to best serve the interest of our farmers and to preserve agriculture in a sustainable fashion for the good of the animals, the land, our families and our society.”
Unlike at Harris-Robinette, most cattle used for beef production spend much of their lives in feedlots and fed very high rations of corn, which is both detrimental to their welfare and more taxing on the planet. The HSUS welcomes Peak City Grill’s progress, and looks forward to working with the restaurant and other local eateries to further switch from factory farm products to foods from farms and ranches that adhere to higher animal welfare standards.
Kimberley Alboum, North Carolina state director for The HSUS said: “More and more family farmers are confronting animal abuses on factory farms and promoting higher animal welfare standards as the foundation of economic vibrancy in rural communities. We applaud the discriminating retailers and consumers who are seeking out humanely raised food options and providing support for humane and sustainable agriculture.”
The HSUS advocates compassionate eating – or the Three Rs: “reducing” or “replacing” consumption of animal products, and “refining” our diets by choosing products from sources that adhere to higher animal welfare standards. The HSUS supports those farmers and ranchers who give proper care to their animals, act in accordance with the basic ethic of compassion to sentient creatures under their control, and practice and promote humane and environmentally sustainable agriculture.
