Reward Offered in Jackson County, Oregon Buck Deer Killing
The Humane Society of the United States and The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for illegally killing a buck deer in Jackson County, Oregon. This adds to an existing reward from the Oregon Hunters Association.
According to the Oregon State Police, Sergeant Kirk Meyer is investigating the July 2 discovery of deer parts – including a deer head with the skull cap and antlers removed. An area resident found the animal’s remains on Antioch Road near milepost 10. Evidence indicates that the remains were dumped there after the deer was killed and butchered in the East Evans Creek or Sams Valley area.
Scott Beckstead, Oregon senior state director for The HSUS said, “The poacher responsible for this crime has a clear disregard for the law, and we implore anyone with information to come forward. We commend the Oregon State Police for its diligent work to bring wildlife violators to justice.”
Anyone with information concerning the killing of this buck deer is asked to contact Sergeant Meyer at (541) 618-7944 or the Turn in Poachers (TIP) Program hotline at 1-800-452-7888.
The HSUS and HSWLT work to curb poaching across the country. Visit humanesociety.org/poaching for more information. The HSUS recently doubled its standard poaching reward from $2,500 to $5,000.
- Wildlife officials estimate that nationwide, tens of millions of animals are poached annually.
- It is estimated that only 1 percent to 5 percent of poached animals come to the attention of law enforcement.
- Poachers injure or kill wildlife anytime, anywhere and sometimes do so in particularly cruel ways. Wildlife officials report that poachers often commit other crimes as well.
- The HSUS and HSWLT work with state and federal wildlife agencies to offer rewards of $5,000 for information leading to arrest and conviction of suspected poachers.
