Humane Society of the United States Urges a Halt to the Construction of Desert Swim with Dolphins Facility
A commercial “swim-with-the-dolphins” facility, Dolphinaris, has been proposed for tribal land in the desert of Arizona, and The HSUS opposes this effort.
Dolphins used in the program will have to be transferred to this new facility in the desert, subjecting the animals to the rigors of long-term transport and exposing the animals to unnecessary risks in these interactive programs. The HSUS has long opposed hands-on encounters with wildlife for commercial purposes.
The HSUS supports winding down similar programs where they have long existed. We strongly oppose the expansion of these programs.
There’s no compelling reason to bring dolphins into captive settings that bear a poor resemblance to their native habitats, and it poses an additional risk to allow for extended human interactions with the animals.
The Humane Society of the United States is calling for Ventura Entertainment, the corporate sponsors of Dolphinaris, to halt plans to build yet another unnecessary swim-with-dolphin facility.
