USDA Moves to Ban Slaughter of Downer Veal Calves Too Sick or Injured to Walk
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has granted The Humane Society of the United States’ 2009 legal petition requesting that the agency halt the inhumane practice of slaughtering downer veal calves too sick, weak or tired to even stand up.

Md. Legislature Urged to Pass Bill Addressing Impacts of Pit Bull Ruling
The Md. Senate voted unanimously today to pass legislation in response to a 2012 Court of Appeals decision that forced many Maryland dog owners to choose between their pets and their homes. The HSUS now urges legislators to find common ground and pass a compromise bill.

HSI and The HSUS Commend CITES Parties for Protecting Certain Shark and Manta Ray Species from International Commercial Trade
Humane Society International Deputy Wildlife Director Rebecca Regnery released the following statement praising the final decision at the meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species to list the oceanic whitetip shark, the porbeagle shark, three species of hammerhead sharks, and two species of manta rays, great and reef, on Appendix II.
