    In the wake of the National Park Service’s announcement of its plans to kill bison inside and around Grand Canyon National Park, The HSUS has offered to help develop and assist in implementing an on-the-ground joint program to manage the population in a humane way using fertility control technology. The program would model a highly successful bison population control program conducted on Catalina Island in California, reducing the birth rate to levels approaching zero.

    Groups Demand U.S., Canada Act to Save North Atlantic Right Whales

    The Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife, Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC)

    Conservation and animal-protection groups today sought action by the United States and Canada to prevent painful, deadly entanglements in fishing gear that threaten the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. In letters to Canadian officials and the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, the groups demanded action to reduce risks to these imperiled whales. North Atlantic right whales, one of the world’s most endangered mammals with fewer than 500 individual animals remaining on Earth, lost nearly 3 percent of their population this year.

The 12-day probe by The HSUS uncovered elephant ivory jewelry and trinkets of dubious origins for sale across the Commonwealth, from Great Barrington to the North Shore, to Boston and down to the Cape.
