Fluvanna SPCA Awarded $5,000 Pets of Valor Grant from The Humane Society of the United States
The Humane Society of the United States is pleased to award a grant of $5,000 to the Fluvanna SPCA for providing pre-adoption care for Chilly, the English bulldog mix whose heroic actions to save her owner’s life earned her the Pets of Valor Award.

Dog Tethering Law Passes Oregon Legislature
A coalition of animal welfare organizations, veterinarians and law enforcement agencies commended the Oregon legislature for restricting the chaining and tethering of dogs throughout the state.

“Furry Babies” Pet Store Faces Lawsuit for Allegedly Selling Unhealthy Puppy Mill Puppies
A group of consumers filed a lawsuit in LaSalle County Circuit Court against the Chicago pet store chain Furry Babies, Inc., claiming that the store sold sick puppies from puppy mills to unsuspecting consumers in violation of state consumer protection laws.

218 Animals Rescued from Marion County Property
218 animals, many in urgent need of veterinary attention, were rescued from a Columbia, Miss., property after authorities discovered them living in filth and suffering from a variety of untreated medical conditions and a lack of basic care.

Illinois Legislature Passes Bill to Protect Consumers from Buying Sick Pets
The Illinois House and Senate passed legislation known as the “puppy lemon law” to protect pets and consumers who purchase dogs or cats from pet stores. The bill passed the House with a 67 – 49 vote and the Senate with a 44 – 13 vote.

Reward Offered in Virginia Pit Bull Slashings
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the severe mutilation of two American Pit Bull Terriers. These two attacks, one fatal, are suspected to be related.

Bill to Allow Pets aboard Amtrak Trains Praised
Passengers would be allowed to take their pet cats or dogs on certain Amtrak trains under a bill introduced yesterday in Congress. U.S. Reps. Jeff Denham, R-Calif., and Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., introduced the legislation, H.R. 2066, or the Pets on Trains Act of 2013.
