Congressional Votes on Farm Bill Bring Good News, Bad News for Animals
The U.S. House Committee on Agriculture, in taking up the Farm Bill yesterday, approved an amendment to crackdown on spectators at animal fighting ventures, but also approved a destructive, constitutionally questionable amendment to strip states of their right to protect farm animals and other animals from exploitation and abuse.

Tennessee TV Ads Call for Governor to Veto Whistleblower Suppression Bill
At a press conference at the state capitol, The Humane Society of the United States and Rep. Gloria Johnson, D-Knoxville District 13, screened a new television commercial showing violent abuse of horses from an investigation into the Tennessee walking horse industry. The commercial is the latest effort by The HSUS to urge Gov. Bill Haslam to veto SB1248, the special interest “ag-gag” bill.

The Humane Society of the United States urged Gov. Bill Haslam to veto Tennessee’s notorious anti-whistleblower, or “ag-gag,” bill, SB1248, which would make it a crime for reputable non-profit organizations and journalists to document and expose unethical and illegal activity in horse stables and at industrial agriculture facilities.

California’s Dangerous Anti-Whistleblower Bill Pulled by Author
The California anti-whistleblower “ag-gag” legislation, Assembly Bill 343 backed by the California Cattlemen’s Association, was pulled by the bill’s author, Assemblymember Jim Patterson, R-Fresno, after facing widespread opposition by a broad range of organizations including those that work to protect food safety, the environment, animals, the first amendment and labor unions.
