Michaelen Barsness is the Vice President of Finance and Controller.
Barsness is a Certified Public Accountant with nine years of public accounting (audit and tax preparation) experience and 10 years of data warehousing experience. She joined the HSUS in 2014 after serving as the vice president and controller of United Way Worldwide for four years.
Barsness’ work in public accounting was with BDO USA, a national accounting firm. She has experience auditing a variety of not-for-profit organizations including United Negro College Fund, the Kennedy Center and World Wildlife Foundation, as well as a number of post-retirement benefit plans. She has performed audits in accordance with the Office of Management and Budget Circular A-133. She has also worked extensively with clients to implement new accounting standards.
Barsness’ experience with data warehousing was with Fannie Mae. She managed the production cycle for a number of databases and the development of database enhancements using the system development lifecycle. She also acted as a key resource to internal customers related to multifamily mortgage data.
Barsness holds a Bachelor of Business Studies in Accounting from the College of William & Mary and a Master's in Taxation from the George Washington University. She is a member of the Greater Washington Society of CPAs and holds a CPA license in Maryland and Virginia. Michaelen lives in Maryland with her three children.
