The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking three Field Veterinary Technicians (on call) for our Rural Area Veterinary Services (RAVS).  The main responsibility of this position is to provide veterinary nursing services for remote veterinary field medicine and surgery clinics.  Work with RAVS program staff to ensure successful operation of field clinics and oversight of volunteer clinic teams.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Acting as Area Lead or support in one or more clinic areas and/or Trip Lead for field teaching clinics;
  • Overseeing and training clinic personnel;
  • Teaching, mentoring and motivating veterinary students and professional volunteers in regard to clinic protocols and operations, clinical skills and humane ethic; 
  • Providing RACE approved training for veterinary professionals; 
  • Coordinating and managing day-to-day operations of field clinics;
  • Participating in development and implementation of field protocols and clinical training curriculum;
  • Utilizing creative problem solving and clinical expertise to providing  high quality veterinary nursing care under varying field conditions, including: management and administration of skilled anesthesia services; assessment of anesthetic risk and implementation of appropriate protocols, wellness and preventative health care for dogs and cats; clinical care for infectious disease conditions in the field setting and provision of emergency/ critical care nursing;
  • Coordinating supply and equipment inventory in the field: overseeing volunteers in inventory, organization, packing and transport of equipment/supplies for field clinics;
  • Maintaining controlled substance inventory in the field as per established procedures and performing required recordkeeping in accordance with DEA guidelines/regulations;
  • Providing consultation and assistance with various program coordination responsibilities including: data collection and reporting; research and assessment projects; volunteer recruitment and engagement;
  • Actively seeking professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in pertinent veterinary topics and relevant professional skills to enhance personal and organizational effectiveness;
  • Overseeing professional and student volunteers in the field.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • 1-3 years relevant field clinic experience required;
  • Credential/license desirable but not required;
  • High degree of knowledge/experience in veterinary nursing and field medicine. Experience providing high quality veterinary nursing and anesthesia in the field setting; experience in high quality, volume spay/neuter and community/field medicine;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to lead, collaborate with and motivate others;
  • Ability to teach and supervise individuals of varying backgrounds and experience levels
  • Ability to make well-considered decisions in high stress;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Proficiency in general computer applications, including Windows/Microsoft products (Word, Excel);
  • Willingness to travel in remote/resource-limited conditions;
