WASHINGTON, DC – Due to cost and other barriers, pets in under-resourced communities often do not have access to basic veterinary care such as spay/neuter services, vaccinations, parasite prevention and other medical and preventative care.
With a $40,000 grant from PetSmart Charities, the Fund for Animals Rural Area Veterinary Services program aims to support pets and pet parents in need with high quality veterinary field clinics to provide vaccines, spay/neuter and urgent care for sick and injured animals in rural communities where regular veterinary care is not available. Over the course of two-week clinics, the RAVS team will care for up to 1,000 animals - alleviating suffering and improving quality of life for animals and their families.
“In rural communities impacted by economic barriers and geographic isolation, animals suffer from preventable diseases, untreated injuries and homelessness due to overpopulation - simply because families don’t have access to basic veterinary services. RAVS mobile field clinics bring essential veterinary care to the most isolated and underserved communities to alleviate suffering and save animals’ lives,” said Windi Wojdak, director of the RAVS program for the Fund for Animals.
“At PetSmart Charities, we are committed to strengthening our communities by supporting pets and those who love them, and this initiative does just that,” said Kelly Balthazor, regional relationship manager at the national charity. “The Rural Area Veterinary Services Program provides accessible and affordable pet care while removing several barriers that pet parents face when trying to provide care for their beloved pets. We’re thrilled to support this initiative that ensures more people and pets in Native communities stay together.”
Since 1994, through its partnership with nearly 4,000 humane societies, SPCAs and pet rescues across North America, PetSmart Charities has helped more than 9 million pets to find loving homes via its in-store adoption program in over 1,650 PetSmart® stores. The leading funder of animal welfare has also donated nearly $400 million, to positively impact communities, to connect people and pets, to help preserve families and to improve access to veterinary care through initiatives like this with the RAVS program.
About the Fund for Animals Rural Area Veterinary Services

Our MASH-style mobile field teams have reached animals on 42 Native American reservations, 35 non-native rural communities, and 18 countries around the world. In addition, our veterinary field training programs have provided life-changing service-learning opportunities for more than 8,000 veterinary students and professionals.
