WASHINGTON—Animal protection leaders are welcoming the inauguration of President Joseph R. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris with a plea for a strong commitment to strengthening federal animal welfare policy.
Sara Amundson, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund, and Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, issue the following statement:
“We congratulate President Biden and Vice President Harris and wish them well as they assume the duties of their offices. Recognizing their strong individual histories of support for animal protection, we hope to see their administration establish timely commitments to act on the priorities we’ve discussed with their transition teams, which include strengthening the enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act, the Humane Slaughter Act and the Horse Protection Act and reversing the prior administration’s approach to animal welfare at the federal level.”
The organizations also urge the Biden administration to address the links between wildlife markets, wildlife trafficking and COVID-19; the animal welfare, worker safety and pandemic risks created by excessive line speeds at American slaughter plants; and the irresponsible approval of trophy hunting permits for the killing of endangered species.
