The Humane Society of the United States welcomes Katherine L. Karl of Washington, D.C. as its new general counsel and chief legal officer. Karl is the third person to hold this position in the organization’s 62-year history, succeeding Roger Kindler who started with the organization in 1975 and ascended to the role of general counsel 25 years ago.

Karl comes to The HSUS with both extensive law firm and non-profit experience. She served most recently as deputy general counsel of the American Cancer Society, an organization she joined in 2008. Prior to working with ACS, she practiced law with the firm of Caplin & Drysdale, where she exclusively advised non-profit organizations.

Karl is a magna cum laude graduate of Cornell University. She earned her J.D. from Yale Law School, where she served as senior editor of the Yale Law Journal. She served as a law clerk to U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Robinson in the Southern District of New York, and also worked on Capitol Hill as an aide to the late Sen. Ted Kennedy and the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Roger Kindler, our long-serving general counsel, will assist her with the transition. Kindler carried out many legal roles during a period of both growth and risk, as the organization and its affiliates challenged a wide range of institutional forms of animal cruelty and expanded its work into more than 50 countries. Kindler will continue to work on the ongoing expansion of the international affiliates’ animal protection work.

“Katherine Karl brings immense talents to her new role, and I am thrilled that we are adding her to our executive team,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. “She has big shoes to fill in replacing Roger Kindler, but she’s so well suited to help us confront the challenges in the years ahead. I am tremendously grateful to Roger Kindler for his service to our organization and to animal protection, having brought both legal acumen and unswerving dedication to our mission and purpose.”

The HSUS expresses its gratitude to Major, Lindsey & Africa, the legal recruiting firm which generously provided its services pro bono, and immensely aided the organization in its search and selection of Ms. Karl as general counsel.
