The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Manager, Training and Development for the Human Capital and Development department.  This position is responsible for the daily execution of the Organizational and Employee Development strategy, including managing the design, implementation, and evaluation of training programs that facilitate professional development and continuous learning to achieve the organization’s goals and operational objectives

This position will be responsible for:

  • Managing assessments for training and development of staff and managers to enhance the effectiveness of employee performance in achieving the goals and objectives of the organization;
  • Developing and managing the management and employee training programs for all levels in the organization (new manager to executive) to include the design, implementation, facilitation, and evaluation of courses;
  • Managing the global organization-wide mentorship program;
  • Providing consultation to departments regarding mentoring and coaching;
  • Managing the individual development planning process for key staff in succession planning;
  • Training and coaching managers, supervisors, and others involved in employee development;
  • Designing and developing training computer-based programs for management and employees as needed to include developing coursework in Articulate or Captivate;
  • Developing professional development plans for departments to support employee growth and development;
  • Evaluating training courses, objectives, and accomplishments and providing constructive feedback;
  • Conducting follow-up studies of completed training programs to evaluate and measure results and modify as needed;
  • Managing, coaching, and developing staff effectively while motivating them to meet and exceed goals;
  • Setting employee objectives, conducting performance reviews, and recommending pay actions for direct report(s);
  • Championing the desired norms, culture, and philosophies of the organization;
  • Staying abreast of HR, training & development, and nonprofit organization best practices and latest trends. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Training & Development, Business, or a related field, or equivalent work experience required; 
  • Minimum of five years of related experience in training development and facilitation for operations in a large organizational and/or functional business unit required;
  • Minimum of two years of management experience required;
  • Professional Association of Training & Development (ATD) certification desired;
  • A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and professional presence for interacting with and influencing others at all position levels, as well as for facilitating training and conducting public speaking/presentations;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, deploy, evaluate, and manage organization-wide training initiatives for staff and management;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage vendors in a cost-effective way;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of Instructional Design principles for adult learners;
  • Must be able to use instructional design tools such as Articulate and/or Captivate to build engaging, effective Computer Based Training (CBT) courses;
  • Must have the ability to manage conflict and manage composure and control in difficult situations, particularly in group settings;
  • Knowledge and understanding of staff management practices and processes and the ability to establish accountabilities and expectations and manage performance to achieve results;
  • Must be able to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust, respect, and confidentiality and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy, and discretion;
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and strategic thinking while managing multiple, changing, and conflicting priorities with time sensitive deliverables;
  • Demonstrated propensity to be creative, proactive, and self-motivated in the execution and completion of assigned accountabilities;
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to organize, present, and articulate ideas both verbally and in writing; the ability to demonstrate effective and credible presentation and facilitation skills is essential;
  • Business acumen, along with strong organizational, project, and priority management skills; planning; negotiation; mediation; analytical; problem-solving; and communication skills;
  • The ability to work independently, as an effective team member, and with all levels of the organization;
  • The ability to handle information of a sensitive and confidential nature, ensure that such information is secured and maintained in an appropriate manner;
  • Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office, including word processing and spreadsheet software (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel);
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) is desired;
  • An interest in and commitment to animal welfare and protection is highly desired;
