The Mock family had been operating a horse rescue for several years when an article in All Animals inspired them to add a new equine.
The article was about the Platero Project, a privately funded HSUS program that collaborates with the Bureau of Land Management to help burros. The loyal, resilient animals face the same threats as wild horses but are often overlooked in the equine world. Intrigued, Robin Mock—co-founder of Zephaniah’s Promise Ranch, a rescue facility in Goldendale, Washington, that provides free equine programs for children—connected with a program manager, who suggested a 2-year-old adoptable burro named Samson. A few weeks later, Robin and her husband, Steve, brought Samson to the ranch.
At first, Samson was afraid of the horses on the ranch, but eventually the Mocks brought him out into a pasture that shared a fence with the horses so they could get used to one another. A few weeks later, Robin opened the gate so the equines could travel back and forth. Within a month, Samson and Remy (Robin’s riding horse) were bonded.
Playful Samson has continued to blossom in his four years at the ranch, going from a shy guy to running head down, full bore across the pasture and exploding into the burro version of a “jumping karate kick,” says Robin. He helps kids who are intimidated by the size of the horses. With his endearing burro smile, “radar ears” and wagging tail, he’s the perfect equine ambassador.
“He has been a wonderful addition to our rescue ranch here in Goldendale,” Robin says. “He is loved by all and keeps us entertained. Interestingly, he has never uttered one bray. I keep waiting for him to discover he has a ‘voice’ but so far he has remained silent.”
Zephaniah’s Promise is also home to Zac the border collie mix, three cats and eight chickens. “There is nothing more rewarding than rescuing an animal,” says Robin. “The love and gratitude they show in return is boundless.”
