In response to the news that Botswana lifted its ban on elephant hunting Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International released the following statement:

“We are deeply disappointed by the government of Botswana's decision to lift its ban on trophy hunting which puts a price on the heads of wild animals, just like the illegal wildlife trade that results in the poaching of magnificent species like elephants and rhinos. Trophy hunting will not solve Botswana's human-wildlife conflict challenges or the poaching epidemic there and elsewhere in Africa. Co-existence between wild animals and communities is the only way that wildlife populations will survive. What a shame that Botswana, previously hailed as a shining example of wildlife conservation and a safe haven for elephants, has opted to become a promoter of trophy hunting.”
