A list of 2010 accomplishments is contained in our annual report and our 2010 accomplishments page. Some highlights include:
- HSUS animal care centers provide emergency treatment and sanctuary to nearly 16,000 animals, while our veterinary clinics and wildlife experts rescue and treat thousands more
- Federal bills to strengthen shark finning ban and prohibit crush videos signed into law
- Five HSUS undercover investigations expose abuses at industrial egg, pork and turkey facilities
- HSUS teams deploy to 51 emergency rescues, saving nearly 11,000 animals from puppy mills, animal fighting operations, and egregious neglect
- 98 pro-animal state laws and regulations are enacted, including the nation's first ban on the sale of whole battery cage eggs
- The federal Truth in Fur Labeling Act is enacted, following years of lobbying, lawsuits, and exposés of mislabeled and unlabeled fur-trimmed garments
- The HSUS combats Gulf Coast pet overpopulation through innovative outreach programs and funding assistance for three spay/neuter clinics
The 2010 Form 990 includes the required financial information as well as detailed descriptions of HSUS programs and areas that received major financial support, and a brief account of the organization’s accomplishments during the year. Due to space limitations, the information provided is not inclusive of all HSUS programs. Our publications, blogs, websites and other platforms also report on HSUS activities and provide an accounting of the activities and achievements made possible by the generous support of our members and contributors.
The IRS requires disclosure of grants above $5,000. On its 2010 Form 990, The HSUS discloses grants above $500. In addition to its grant-making, The HSUS helps other organizations through a wide variety of programs and services.
In addition to helping animal shelters in myriad ways, we run the nation’s largest system of animal sanctuaries, and also take on the worst abuses of animals, including puppy mills, dogfighting and cockfighting, seal killing, canned hunts, and factory farms.
The HSUS was founded in 1954 to complement the work of local organizations by tackling the root cause of cruelty and suffering. We are dedicated to the principles of rescue, reform and results to bring about a truly humane society.
