Choxie, a rescued Bernese mountain dog, bounds through the snow. Gail Marshall

My husband and I met Choxie about two years after we adopted our first Bernese mountain dog from the Summit County (Colorado) Animal Shelter. I’d gotten involved with the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of the Rockies after adopting Clyde, and just about everyone in town knew him. So it wasn’t a stretch for our mechanic to give me a call about another Berner who needed help.

Choxie was 5 years old when she came to live with us. She was overweight and in a lot of pain because of torn ligaments in both knees. Once she recovered from double knee surgery, she grew to love our long mountain hikes with Clyde. This photo of Choxie was taken one spring morning when my husband and I were cross-country skiing. The snow was coming down hard, and Choxie and Clyde were running around, playing and barking. Clyde has since passed, but Choxie loves our new adopted Berner, Henry.
