Tellie came to me through Austin German Shepherd Rescue. She had been abandoned in a hotel room and taken to a local shelter. I fostered her when I lived in Austin, Texas, in 2008, and we bonded instantly. Since adopting her, I’ve gotten married, had two children and moved to three different countries with the U.S. Foreign Service. She was with me through it all. Despite her occasional trash digging, I’d argue she was the best family dog ever. She was incredibly sweet and gentle with my children, and she hated it when I cried. She would swat her paw at me trying to figure out what was wrong. She absolutely loved truck rides, chasing balls, looking out the window and having her legs rubbed.

Sadly, Tellie passed away last May. My kids took it especially hard because she had been with us their whole lives. She gifted them with a love for animals, for which I will be forever grateful. This is a photo of her lying on the couch by the window, one of her favorite places to stand guard.
