We rejoiced in 2020 when one of the largest grocery corporations in the U.S. made a commitment to sell eggs only from cage-free hens by 2025 or sooner. Ahold Delhaize, the fifth-largest grocery corporation in the U.S., owns chains that include Giant, Food Lion and Stop & Shop, among others. As recently as last year, company executives stated that “we believe supporting animal welfare is the right thing to do,” and expressed their understanding that “farm animal welfare is connected to food safety, due to the close links between space provided to animals and their health.” Unfortunately, Ahold Delhaize is dragging its feet on its commitment to cage-free eggs.

Throughout 2018, Humane Society International has driven transformational changes for animals around the globe. Vietnam adopted animal welfare language for the first time in its history; Unilever supported a global ban on animal testing for cosmetics; the Indonesian government supported a ban on the...

This week, we released footage from the most recent undercover investigation of five fur farms, this time in northern China, the source of most of the world’s fur. What we see is what we’ve come to expect with fur farm investigations: foxes, raccoon dogs and mink pacing their cages frantically, a repetitive behavior associated with mental decline, and filthy, feces-encrusted cages packed so close together that the risk of zoonotic disease spread was nearly palpable.

This year for Thanksgiving, I’m in Texas at our expansive animal sanctuary, Black Beauty Ranch. Founded in 1979, Black Beauty Ranch is home to nearly 650 rescued animals. Some came from slaughterhouses or research laboratories or cases of extreme neglect. Others came from  roadside zoos or were...

We begin our work in 2022 encouraged by the knowledge that a handful of significant animal protection laws at the state level have now taken effect across the country. That makes for a great start to a year in which we hope to extend the reach of our campaigns to help all animals. Two ballot...

On Dec. 31, Florida's greyhound racetracks closed for good as a result of a ballot measure we helped pass with our partner groups in 2018. That win brought down what was once the stronghold of this "sport" and effectively sounded the death knell for greyhound racing in the United States. The work...

Update: By the time our team departed the area in mid-September, 872 families were served during our response effort, including 9,083 animals. When we learned that Hurricane Idalia would likely make landfall, we identified the best means for us to help care for animals in a potential crisis and...

The year 2018 was a historic one for farm animals, with California passing the strongest law against farm animal confinement in the world. We successfully campaigned to protect chickens in the meat industry—moving major US companies to adopt comprehensive welfare reforms and spotlighting those...

Twenty of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon and Joaquin Phoenix, today sent a joint letter to McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook, urging the company to institute commonsense animal welfare reforms advocated by the Humane Society of the United States. The letter, which...

Note: This blog is part of a series highlighting how we fight—and win—for animals . This post focuses on how we’re ending the worst forms of institutionalized animal suffering by working with corporations. Our previous post in this series covered our efforts with governments and legislative bodies...

When the Volcán de Fuego erupted in Guatemala nearly two weeks ago, devastating villages for miles around, Humane Society International’s disaster response team took immediate action. HSI has been helping animals affected by disasters for many years, and it's one of the most crucial services the...

Devastating fires are raging across California, in a terrible scene that has gripped the attention of the entire nation. There are more than 80 people confirmed dead, and countless more missing and displaced from their homes. As we’ve seen in many prior disaster scenarios, thousands of animals, lost...

Today, the Humane Society of the United States asked the Federal Trade Commission, the government agency charged with protecting consumers, to investigate allegedly deceptive marketing claims made by Pilgrim’s Pride, the second largest chicken producer in the United States, which wrongly leads...

Over the last decade, dozens of corporations from Walmart to McDonald’s have promised to reduce animal suffering in their supply chains, including eliminating cages for egg-laying hens, ending the sourcing of pork from operations that use gestation crates, and mandating better treatment of chickens...

In recent weeks, even as slaughterhouses have emerged as hotspots for the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration has been quietly issuing record numbers of waivers for them to kill animals at higher speeds. Now, a coalition of animal welfare groups, workers groups and consumer organizations...

A coalition including the Humane Society of the United States today sued the Trump administration for allowing chicken slaughterhouses to dial up the breakneck speeds at which they kill birds. The increase, announced in 2018, allows slaughterhouses that receive a waiver from the administration to...

Today the Humane Society of the United States filed a federal lawsuit challenging the response plan for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (or “bird flu”) of the United States Department of Agriculture. The response plan, produced by the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, is shortsighted and...

Today, I’m asking for your help in urging IHOP to take action to keep its animal welfare promises. Here at the Humane Society family of organizations, we work with many corporations to improve conditions for animals whose welfare is affected by their operations. We believe that a lot of businesses...

Our Animal Protection Litigation team plays a critical role at the Humane Society of the United States, filing lawsuits and legal petitions to support our major campaigns, drafting language for state and federal animal protection bills and ballot measures, and defending animal protection laws once...

We have made remarkable progress in our work to end cruel cage confinement of farm animals during 2020. As a result, millions more animals around the world will no longer face lives of abject misery in tiny cages and crates on massive factory farms that treat them as products and not as sentient...
